Concert Summary

This is an excellent partial set from Big Brother and the Holding Company, performed right around the time much of their classic album, Cheap Thrills, was being recorded. Joplin is in fine form here, and fans of James Gurley's grungy psychedelic guitar meltdowns will be delighted.

Following a brief tune-up sequence and excited audience encouragement from the emcee, Janis immediately leads the group into "Catch Me…entire summary

"pathetic lost soul looking for and not finding love" Pathetic? That's a strong word. What's the point of your post? Nothing about the music, everything about her stardom/personality. You're an idiot. How does any human have the right to use the word pathetic in relation to another? We're all pathetic deep down.

A piece of my heart is eternally going round and round with her, wherever she is singing now. Peace Janis!!

Janis was always raw and fragile. One commenter said she was powerful. Well her voice was. Her personality was powerful but not in a healthy way. She was a victim of herself and her profound lack of self worth. High intelligence and a need for recognition and acceptance. She was used and abused. It is noteworthy that she died shortly after visiting her home town in "triumph". If you have seen the film of that visit you saw a pathetic lost soul looking for and not finding love. A great talent and tragic figure.

damn....thankyou for this! Janis is so UNLEASHED in her Big Brother days. Yeah Big Brother was grunge...but she took up the slack and poured her soul into the mix. I'll take these dayz over the latter. The Latter was gold, it was just different. Watch Monterey Pop and tell me she was'nt at her best. peace out. Bruce

I'm so ashamed of the modern age, with all those Britney Spears and JLO assholes... If only I could build a time machine to go back to 1968 and here Janis's delightful melodies. She will always be my favourite musician! This is a phenomenal concert anyway! Peace!!!

Good Big Brother concert....raw and real...they're a cross between gut-bucket garage rock and pre-punk. Janis is smokin'! Still one of the greatest vocalist's, (male or female, black or white), in rock music.

Who's "Jimmy Hendrix"? Any relation to Jimi?

  • Anonymous | Wednesday, May 28, 2008 | 2:58 am

I was at a Big Brother concert around this time at Winterland and saw Jimmy Hendrix the same night. Janus had been sick and missed her week earlier playdate so showed up unexpectedly. Jimmy stood right next to me taking home movies of Janis.
