Concert Summary

By the time 1978 rolled around, the Grateful Dead had returned from what was an extended break mid-way through the decade that enabled the various members to work on their solo projects. Bob Weir took advantage of the time and space to focus on several different groups in the interim, including Kingfish, Bobby and the Midnites, and the Bob Weir Band. It is the Bob Weir Band, which includes eventual Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland, that is captured on stage at San Francisco’s Old Waldorf stage in March of 1978. Though the Dead was back together again, it didn’t stop their youngest…entire summary

I saw this tour on 3.9.78 at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. An amazing show. Band was very tight & they had a sweet/simple light show. Bobby Cochran was Weir's lead guitar player. He was ripping it up. I saw The Jerry Garcia Band exactly one week later 3.16.78 at the Spectrunm in Phila. They were AWFUL. I love Jerry but he was high as a kite and just didn't care that night. He had Keith, Donna, John Kahn, Buzz Buchanan, & Maria Maldaur in the band. Best part of the night was Levon Helm & the RCO Allstars opened, they were great. Did all The Band stuff that Levon sings. The Weight, Cripple Creek, The night they drove old dixie down. Peace. Miss ya Jerry!!!

This recording is impeccable in sound although I really could not pick up Kelly's harp playing whatsoever - unless he was only on Bomb's Away which I just had to skip on principle. The band is tight in their harmonies and instrumentation. Much livlier sound than what most of Bob's bands have put forth since then (Midnights). Solos are well played and the band does a great job of building their energy in most of these tracks. I highly recommend this show to hear Bob on his own and some early, great sounding Brent.

I saw the Bob Weir Band and Jerry Garcia Band in the Fall of 1978 at WSU. The crowd went nuts when Jerry would show his face behind the amps during Bob's sets. But seriously I thought Bob's band way out shined Jerry's that night. Jerry had Donna G. and Maria Malduar for back up singers, but Bob's music was new and fresh and really had the audience rockin! I got to talk with Bob after the show, which was a thrill for a California boy a long way away from S.F. and Winterland.

Is there a Bobby and the Midnites show out there?

Per crippledbutfree's question, when Bob had a band with bassist Rob Wasserman he didn't use a lead guitarist so that his group would have a different sound than the Dead (notwithstanding few lead guitarists wanted a nightly comparison to Jerry Garcia). This was particularly possible because Wasserman was an exceptional soloist in his own right. In the 70s and 80s however, with Kingfish, Bob Weir Band and Bobby and The Midnites, Weir always had a lead guitarist (at various times, Robbie Hoddinott, Bobby Cochran and Steve Kimock).

Nice recording and late afternoon listening. Easy To Slip reminds me of how much I miss Lowell.

Great sound, Bob's voice sounds great, still good though. I also thought Bob never used a Lead guitarist in any of his "bands". Grate Sounds

The timeline is off here--Brent Mydland had not yet joined the Dead at this time. Mydland, Rick Carlos and John Mauceri came out of auditions in Los Angeles for the tour to promote Heaven Help The Fool. Mydland had been in a group called Silver, who released an album on Arista around 1976. Later in 1978, when the Bob Weir Band toured the Pacific Northwest with the Jerry Garcia Band, Garcia suggested to Weir that Mydlands would work as the keyboard player for the Dead (since Keith Godchaux was going to be nudged aside).

Its great to hear obscure stuff like this--exactly the sort of historical material that should be posted for "B-Side Friday."
