Concert Summary

Brand X was the original "jam band" in its native England, and although it is mainly a jazz ensemble, the band was more closely aligned with the prog-rock movement that spawned ELP, YES, Gentle Giant, and Genesis.

This recording is taken from the band's second U.S. tour, taped at New York's famous Bottom Line on Halloween 1978. The band had recently experienced a burst of commercial success, largely due to a well-publicized alliance with Genesis member, Phil Collins. By the time they had found an audience in the U.S. and Europe, Brand X was essentially a jazz-fusion band but its…entire summary

Haha, thanks for the shout out, syncopatico. We did in fact uncover some new material, including the John Goodsall introduction heard here. The early show (including Happy Halloween wishes) will be released within the next week or two, so stay tuned. See you there!

Ah, things are starting to make sense thanks to the wonderous Wolfgang's Vault! So this is the almost complete late show except for the very end of Nuclear Burn and the encore which was probably Deadly Nightshade(?). I guess WV should also list original guitarist John Goodsall in the credits since he makes a 'special guest star' appearance on Access To Data and The Poke. (This means that the versions of Nuclear Burn and Deadly Nightshade on the 'Rated X' bootleg must come from the early show (or maybe the previous night if it was recorded too?) Hopefully Dopeburger (nice moniker!) and his buds can dig up the early show (hint, hint!) so discerning listeners can get to hear that incredible 20 min. Deadly Nightshade again--and hopefully without Tom Scott and his crew 'sitting in' this time!!!

I think syncopatico is right. This sounds like two nights put together.

Most people never heard of these guys??? Too bad, but I strongly suggest you give them a listen!! I know the groups nowadays all are sounding the same... So go back in time, and see how it's done!!

Hmm, that's a tricky one Syncopatico. They definitely did play on the 30th as well. Sometimes, the tapes we transfer were edited and spliced for the original radio shows (most likely the source of the bootleg) and the shows themselves were compilations of different performances. We'll look into this and try to get it straightened out ASAP. (Also, that is Tom Scott at the end of Deadly Nightshade.)

This brings back MANY fond memories (I saw this tour on it's L.A. stop at the Roxy). Percy Jones is really on fire here and just so danged creative, this to me is the BEST Brand X lineup, period!

addendum: another theory is that some tracks (1,2,3?) might be from the previous night, and this is a combination of those, since this informative site below lists that Brand X also played the Bottom Line on 10-30-78. http://members.cox.net/scottstrades/BrandX_Performances.html

OK, here we go!: This is one of my favorite fusion concerts of all time! Just listen to one audience member's reaction after the incredible version of The Ghost of Mayfield Lodge > Earth Dance (you can hear his comment at the very beginning of track 6: Black Moon)! So thanks so much to Wolfgang's Vault for bringing us the (almost) full show! But here it gets a little strange, and my theory for this must be that there were two shows this special Halloween night! (I have an old bootleg cd of this gig(?), called Rated X, and Peter Robinson's intro for Nuclear Burn is completely different, with a slightly changed setlist, but that disc is missing completely Access To Data and The Poke so this is the superior version!) But unfortunately here Nuclear Burn fades out at the 10:00 min. mark, and even more disturbing is that the very end of Deadly Nightshade cuts into a completely different tune, by a different fusion band(?)--give it a listen to hear what i mean. So you don't get to hear the completion of this great performance. This doesn't occur on the boot--strange stuff. Anyway, just to hear these versions of tracks 4, 5 & 7 (with a killer drum solo from Mike Clark) is enough for me to rate this one seriously 5 big stars!
