Concert Summary

Get comfortable, ‘cuz all the stories are true - the E Street Band came to play, and they’re not gonna stop until the roof caves in! This is powerful rock ‘n' roll revivalism and Springsteen makes the heat rain down upon the assembled Winterland parishioners.

Years before punk deconstructed popular music as a violent protest against the bloated rock ‘n' roll dinosaurs staggering from stadium to stadium, Bruce Springsteen was earnestly providing his own alternative to bone-headed riffing and cowbell solos,…entire summary

my father got me into the boss from the moment I was born. I have heard it all. He had all the bootlegs, all of them. But this show(other than the one recorded the day of my birth 11-05-1980)is my all time favorite. The story in the middle of backstreets about the girl, and the long version of "prove it " make it the greatest live show ever!

my bootleg copy was warped and to get it to play without skipping i would have to tape a penny to the top of the needle....this is how i got through 7 years of college...seen him 45 times since then...met him once in a bar in atlanta...my life is complete...

Not taking away from Bruce and everything he's done in the interim, (he's still fantastic) but as far as I'm concerned this era '74-'79 was his finest hour. I saw him in NYC at The Palladium, which is about a 2,000 seat theater (maybe), as I recall he played like 5 nights and it was incredible!! The best Rock and Roll show I've seen and I've seen Dylan, The Stones and The Who. Amazing

This man is such an under-recognized song-writer! Songs like 'Racing in the Streets' and 'Jungleland'... MAN! Some people are just blessed with incredible talent! Thank you for this AMAZING POST, and for those who shared their first hand experiences! I am 31 and have love Bruce since the 'Born in the USA' days when I first heard him on the radio. With each album and performance I've heard, I grow in appreciation. But, shucks... THIS concert redefines the man and his band, yet again!!! Thanks Wolfgang! (only wishin' I could have been there!)

Reading the post from sfins,he is right. The first time I saw Springsteen was early 1973 at Liberty Hall,Houston Tx.,it was a great show, but about a year later he played the Houston Music Hall it was amazing. In those days most shows were full of rowdy dope smoking freaks(we did not have hippies in Texas),but once the show started, you could hear a rat piss in that place. The acoustics in that place were outstanding, when he did Sandy you could hear him without his mike. And they did play almost 3 hours straight. To this day this is still one of the best shows I have ever seen.

I was a Junior at Santa Clara University and went to see this show. I saw Elvis Costello's first show in the U.S., Tom Petty's first Fillmore Show, the last show ever by the Sex Pistols--all the "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass"festivals, etc. This still stands out as THE BEST. "Backstreets/Drive All Night/Sad Eyes" still grabs my heart and drags it out my throat whenever I hear it. It's like yesterday and I'm 51 now. No one who never saw Bruce's concerts in these years can ever understand. He HELD THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND. YOu could have heard a PIN drop at any time..those quiet moments as he wove his tales with the piano softly in the background. I don't know how he managed to stand after the shows -- they would go 3 hours, amazingly intense and non-stop.

Thank you for posting this concert Wolfang...brings me back to my younger days. Like other posts here, I was not a fan of Bruce the first time I saw him in 1981. A friend dragged me to see him at the famous "red rock" outdoor theater in Denver. Simular to this show, he played for hours and hours and I could not believe the energy of his show. As in those days, Red Rocks was general admission, we arrived in the early morning and around 2PM, The Boss came out in his usual garb of the day, a flannel red and black shirt and played a song for the 1,000 people in attendance. Changed my opinion of him and have ever since been a fan. Side note: this summer of 81 concert was famous for the fact (this is for anyone who has been to RRs), that a young man who had snuck into the concert and was sitting up in the cracks of the red rock (some 100 or more feet in the air) fell down onto the stairway below. When we reached him, he was still breathing but the police were yelling at him for "getting what he deserved". Sad but memorable. Do not know if he lived or not.
