Concert Summary

The last official line-up of the Grateful Dead is featured in this show, the first of two nights at the Zenith Theater in Paris, France. The Dead had not often performed in Paris, so when they came for their 1990 World Tour, it was a special event. This performance only contains one, albeit a very long, song: the 1971 classic "Uncle John's Band."

Originally recorded for the seminal Workingman's Dead album, the song is among the best examples of country rock from that era. Here it is merged with an extensive drum solo from Bill Kruetzmann and Mickey Hart. To get a better idea…entire summary

hey again, patkelley. Sounds like you're right about this line-up including Brent Mydland, but the tapes and documentation we have don't offer any answers to where or when this actually was recorded. We're going to leave it as is for now, and if anyone can help out, we'd truly appreciate it. Thanks for listening. Dopeburger.

thanks, patkelley, we're looking into it and should hopefully have it figured out by next week.

The date on this is wrong. Although they did play at the Zenith on this date, and they did play Uncle J's, this version has Brent Mydland playing, and he had been dead for a few months by this point. Furthermore, the Uncle J's from 10/28/90 comes out of Estimated, and this one obviously comes out of Playin.

I beleive the Dead, for whom I saw more time that I felt I had a chance to see my own family have only improved in feeling comfortable with their songs as the progressed in later years than earlier. The 1990 tour runs were very fine. Regarding Phish, how can respect a band that gives up by stating that their are at the height of their carrers and popoulatity and that is why were are disbanding. Since they all appeared to get along so well, why disband. Why, because they lost the respect of just playing music and switched to popularty as their exit strategy adn measuring stick. I saw them and the hype is all it was, hype.

    Uncle John's Band!...What a GREAT Jam !

Since the Dead had been doing their thing since the 60s, it would not be surprising if there was some diminished sense of unpredictability for both themselves and their fans. I am prejudiced in their favor since I grew up with them, and I never really got Phish. However, the individual appreciation of music and all of the arts is what makes it special. I'm just glad there are so many great performances that have been saved for us to enjoy. Thanks.

"..nostalia act..?" an italian motorcycle difficult to start ??

About this time, I thought that Phish was doing better jams as well as longer set pieces.. The Dead had long since become a self-paradying nostalia act for the kiddies and their parents. They seemed to be going thru the motions and everyone was in denial about the drug use and mutual enabling that was racking the band's music. Even Bruce Hornsby is quoted as saying that many musical outing s with the Dead were not as satisfying as they could have been, especially when they "jammed" but were just staying in the chord...Just my opinion.

Either the dates are reversed or the summary is wrong: "the next night's performance" is listed as 10/27/90 and this one as 10/28/90. BTW is the first set from the other Zenith show forthcoming? This is good stuff!

Actually, Uncle John's Band appears on Workingman's Dead, not American Beauty.
