Concert Summary

This is the second set of the first night of a particularly interesting four-night run at the Fillmore West. Although no special guests are featured like the other three nights, this performance is an excellent example of the band toward the end of the classic Live/Dead album era.

The second set is one long sequence of music and begins in fine form with "China Cat Sunflower." The improvisation out of "China Cat" is quite interesting, as this is still several months before it would be paired with "I Know You Rider" for the rest of the Dead’s career. Instead, …entire summary

Rahrah, you wouldn't happen to have or know of more tape of that show than already circulates would you? That is one of the holy grails. From what does circulate it is obvious Jimmy is really enjoying himself.

Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven and Lovelight are amazing versions of these songs. I think the intensity of these versions are just as good or even better than others Pigpen!

Yes I was! The band was held over for a Sunday night show. If the 26th was a Sunday, that was the night! It was an unforgettable experience. Everyone hung around afterwards. No on wanted to leave. I was also at the sound check. There was something in the air... you could feel that something special could happen, and it did.

Were you at the Tea Party the night of the supposed 4 hour plus Led Zeppelin show? Either 1/23/69 or 1/26/69 (the date most people think it was). Also my favorite Dead period. Can't wait to hear it.

This is my favorite period of the Dead. I was working at the Tea Party at this time, and when they were on... it was, as the song title suggests "... top of the world." However, when it was off, oh my. And with Bear around, anything could happen. That was part of the fun. I seem to remember one of Don Law's most unforgettable bookings a couple of months after this, when the Bonzo Dog Band opened for them... talk about a strange (and beautiful) trip. Anyway, thanks for opening the vault to this era in the Dead's career.
