Concert Summary

Songwriter, bandleader, social critic, poet, and humorist all apply to The Kinks front man Ray Davies. Unlike other British Invasion-era bandleaders, he didn't seem comfortable as a front man. He wasn't cute like the guys in The Beatles or cocky like Jagger from the Stones. The band's sound was also different. Much less rooted in American music, …entire summary

What a landmark in Kinkdom history. I was about 30 feet off to the left of Dave's side of the stage. Ray was trashed (explains the loud singing). I took a picture of Ray balancing a Rheingold beer can on his head during "Alcohol". The antithesis of the prepackaged shows popular today (Police, U2, Coldplay). This show, along with the many Faces shows I attended, will keep me warm when all the fossil fuels have been used up in 2009.

I was lucky enough to see the Kinks on more than one occassion. In the post Beatle age of the seventies there were still enough of us going to concerts as dedicated fans with all the bands lyrics hanging on the end of our tongues. Kinks concerts were joyous sing alongs. LONG LIVE THE KINKS!

Ah ... the Kinks and their unduplicable brand of structured chaos. And with a complete horn section ... on tour ... in the States, no less. The energy of this show is full tilt. Audio quality could be better, but the Felt Forum (if memory serves) has ice rink acoustics. (I still can't get over the horn section! Cool or what?!?!)
