Concert Summary

It’s hard to imagine that over a quarter century has passed since the time this show, featuring an up-and-coming new wave band called U2, was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour in the intimate Orpheum Theater in Boston.

It was shows like this that helped establish U2 as one of the most consistent and powerful live acts, and when the band exploded into one of the biggest bands of all time, there were a number of us who could say: "We saw them in a small venue before they were famous." Those days are long gone, but recordings like this are the next best thing.

saw them on this tour at the santa monica civic auditorium in '81 with carol burnett's late daughter carrie hamilton, a 15yo co-worker at kiqq. like so many of their contemporaries i saw during this era (talk talk comes to mind) they didn't have enough of a repertoire to fill a full-length show, so they repeated some of the songs they opened with. hard to believe u2 was ever short of material, but they were still electric and no one cared if they repeated "gloria", "out of control" or "i will follow", all kroq radio hits at the time.

Saw them opening for the J. Geils band on this tour in an old opera house in Memphis. We were in the pit, Bono was all over the shop...in the crowd up and down the aisles, up the lights' scaffolding...but mainly in arm's length right in front of us! As new as they were to the scene in the States, we were all familiar with the Boy album as we were old hipster wannabees in punk crew mode. However, when Peter Wolf and crew hit the stage...well, what can you say? The Wolf simply ate up the stage. Overall, an incredibly high-energy show! We all thought that this U2 band just MIGHT go somewhere...who knew??

I had attended acouple of shows at a small club in Providence RI. Nobody knew who they were, but they were blowing people away. I was able to attend both Orpheum shows, this one and the one in 83. They were no words to describe what they did to you live. Amazing!!!

First saw U2 in an unexpected appearance at Greenbelt over August Bank Holiday 1981 - they dropped in on their way from London to Newcastle and played a 3 or 4-song set. Most of the 20-odd thousand at Greenbelt that year had barely heard of them at all.

One of my best stories is telling people I saw U2 in a bar. In this case Barrymore's in Ottawa with 350 other friends! Memorable to say the least especially with Adam Clayton's afro hair do & bandana.
